What was once just a rumour has now been confirmed, Alex Kamberis has become the 5th member of the Brunson 10. These 10 future legends of poker will be there to be shot at on Doyle’s Room in Bounty tournaments as well as representing the site in live tournaments and games.



Kamberis caught Doyle’s attention when he was one of the marked men in a Wednesday Bounty Tournament on Doyle’s Room. These tournaments offer online players the chance to play against some of the modern greats and the old boy himself. With a reward on their heads these pros are in dangerous water every time they enter a pot.



The 23 year old Alex Kamberis has won in excess of $4 million playing both live and online. In his landmark year of 2008 Kamberis made over $1.5 million and was top of the CarPLayer’s Online Poker Player of the Year rankings. Doyle Brunson stated of his latest prodigy:

In a recent rant he is less than complimentary about online poker players and the new generation of players coming through on the live poker circuit. I assume he does not include the Brunson 10 in the “genius youngsters”!

“I still believe poker is a “people game”. If you can look a player in the eye, you can learn more in a fraction of a second than a month’s worth of analyzing his play on paper. I’m not saying the paperwork has no value, but for Pete’s sake, don’t these genius youngsters understand the changing gears concept of poker? I may have certain trends in my play that can be monitored but I challenge anyone to figure out what I’m going to do in a poker game. How can they when I don’t know myself what I’m going to do until I do it? I’m always aware of certain things I do while playing a pot and I try to vary different things. That is an “old fashioned” thing called tells.

Speaking of tells, all the top poker players develop what we call mini-tells on every we play with. How? By the way a newcomer handles his chips, his table talk, plus physical tells that almost everyone has. The older pros are aware of this and try to change several times in each session how they bet, etc.

Even the great players sometimes are unaware of some things. I’ve picked up things on almost all the players I’ve played with. The tells have to be in the right situation always, but my point is, how do you learn things like that online?

Anyway, I’ve never pretended to be a bonafide online poker player so I might not know or understand some of the more complex problems. When I hear people talking about tracking devices, statkeeping software, etc. I just think WTF. So maybe it is a different world when you play online and perhaps I’m a dinosaur and don’t understand the ins and outs. But poker to me is a group of players sitting down and trying to figure out how to get the opponent’s chips.”

We always love a bit of the Brunster so let’s just hope he’s a little less cranky now his teeth have been fixed.

Rumours that he is due to retire are rife as he announced early this year that his daughter will be managing the Brunson Ten, and now this unscheduled break definitely seems to suggest that we may be seeing less of our favourite poker player.
The poker legend announced he was going to withdraw from the PartyPoker Premier League IV as well as miss out on other tournaments since he is undergoing surgery.
Doyle announced his withdrawal from the competition and he explained his decision with the following statement: “I’m supposed to play in the Premier League tournament that is being filmed at the M Casino here in Vegas. It is the most widely watched TV show in Europe, with a $100,000 buy-in. That would be great exposure for DoylesRoom but there is no way I’ll be 100% recovered from all that dental surgery so I’ll have to cancel.”
Writing on his blog, Brunson said, “there is no use playing unless you are at your best. The competition has gotten so good you need to feel good physically as well as mentally to have a chance to win. My gut feeling is just chill out until the WSOP and try to have a big series. Could it be my age is finally catching up to me?”
Doyle also commented that he was exhausted after he returned from the Affiliate Conference 2010 in London and along with today’s surgery he knows that he needs to take time and recovery fully.
The poker pro has decided to rest up until the 2010 World Series of Poker which is set for May. Doyle commented that his gut feeling is telling him that he should ‘chill out’ until the WSOP begins and then try to have a big series. Brunson will be missing the WPT event at the Commerce Casino, the Celebrity tournament as well as the NBC Heads Up Championship and a PokerStars TV tournament while he recovers from surgery.

The underdog New Orleans Saints were the sentimental choice going into yesterday’s Super Bowl and one poker pro had more reason than most to cheer the Saints to victory.

Thankfully for Doyle Brunson, Sean Payton’s men overturned the odds and defeated the favourite Indianapolis Colts to give Doyle Brunson a $150,000 payday. It’s the second year in succession that Brunson has won large betting on the NFL. Last year he collected $100,000 after backing the Colts to beat New England.
